New Functionality
Some of the features introduced in Microsoft SharePoint 2010 were put in place because of customer requests, and quite a few are simply an evolution of the SharePoint platform. In the end, the functionality was added to provide a richer experience to the user base.
Microsoft Access Services
You can now create, edit, and update Microsoft Access 2010 databases within SharePoint. These databases can be viewed and manipulated by using a Web browser, the Microsoft Access client, or a Web page that is linked to your site.
Business Connectivity Services
It is now possible to easily connect to external data sources. By using Office 2010, you are able to update external data sources to create, read, update, and delete (CRUD) items.
Digital Asset Manager
SharePoint 2010 has a library dedicated to managing and sharing digital assets such as audio, video, and other rich media files.
Read-Only Databases
SharePoint 2010 now has the ability to set up read-only databases. This is important for upgrades or server maintenance. During these evolutions users are still able to access and view their content. By having this feature there will be less downtime for you during IT operations.
Records Management
Separate locations in which to store records in SharePoint 2010 do not have to be created. Records can be managed in an archive or in the same library or list (in place). When content is declared a record, different policies can be applied to it than are applied to active content (for example, make the content read-only), while maintaining the content in an active list or library.
Microsoft Visio Services
SharePoint 2010 gives you the ability to share and view Microsoft Visio diagrams within a Web browser. It also enables data connected Visio 2010 diagrams to be refreshed and updated from a variety of data sources (also using the browser).
Coauthoring
SharePoint now supports simultaneous multiuser collaboration,meaning that multiple people can edit the same ocument at the same time. Microsoft recommends a maximum number of 10 coauthors. You can have up to 99 coauthors on the same document, but performance will be degraded.
Windows 7 Search
You can now search SharePoint sites directly using the desktop search functionality of the Windows 7 operating system.
Tag Profiles
Find information and discussions on specific keywords or topics using Tag Profile pages.
Chart Web Parts
You can now create charts within a browser based on data in SharePoint lists. You can also use business connectivity and Excel Services–based lists to support these Web Parts.

User Interface
The out-of-the-box interface for SharePoint 2010 uses the ribbon interface found in Microsoft Office clients such as Word and Excel. Including the ribbon in SharePoint 2010 brings continuity to the Office products and also makes it easier and faster to find the functionality you are looking for.

Large List Scalability and Management
SharePoint 2010 supports lists that can contain millions of tems. Administrators are able to control the number of items returned so that searches do not slow down SharePoint. Microsoft does not recommend having more than 30 million items in a list or library.
Improved Backup and Restore
Through the use of Windows PowerShell, SharePoint 2010 can back up or restore not only the farm but also farm configuration information, site collections, subsites, or lists. Administrators can now respond to user needs more quickly and with greater flexibility.

PerformancePoint Services
You now have the ability to create scorecards that bring together data from multiple sources both inside and outside SharePoint 2010. PerformancePoint Services can produce interactive, context-driven dashboards to track the KPIs (key performance indicators) of your organization.
Social Computing
SharePoint 2010 has improved My Site Web sites and social technologies such as blogs, wikis, and RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds.
